Grace Before Requirement

Micah 6:1-8Pastor Mike

Micah 6:8 is familiar enough to become easy to admire and hard to obey. But before God tells His people what He requires, He reminds them what He has already done. He brought them out of Egypt. He provided leaders. He protected them. He carried them. God begins with grace.

That order matters for you too. Christian obedience is not a way to purchase God’s approval. You do not do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly so God will finally accept you. You respond because He has already come toward you in mercy. Grace comes before requirement.

Israel’s temptation was to substitute increasingly impressive religious offerings for a life that actually reflected God’s character. You can do the same thing. It is possible to worship, serve, give, attend church, and know Scripture while avoiding the place where God is asking for obedience. Religious activity can become camouflage when it keeps God away from your business practices, relationships, resentments, or use of power.

So begin this week by remembering rather than performing. Recall where God has carried you, forgiven you, protected you, and changed you. Then ask a simple question: “Because You have been this gracious to me, what kind of life are You forming in me?” Holy obedience begins as gratitude taking shape.

Application

• What specific act of God’s grace or faithfulness do you most need to remember today?

• Where might religious activity be easier for you than the obedience God is actually asking from you?

• How would your motivation for holiness change if you approached obedience as gratitude rather than a way to prove yourself?

Daily Challenge

Write down three ways God has shown you grace. Read them slowly, thank Him for each one, and then pray: “Lord, because You have been faithful to me, show me the obedience You are asking from me today.”

Prayer

Faithful God, thank You that Your grace came before my obedience. Forgive me when I substitute religious activity for a surrendered life. Help me remember what You have done and let gratitude become faithful action. Form Your character in me today. Amen.
