Christian Before ___________.

Colossians 1:13-20Pastor Mike

“Christian before ______.”

That simple phrase can become a powerful spiritual test. Fill in the blank with something important to you: American, parent, pastor, professional, conservative, progressive, business owner, athlete, retiree, or anything else that carries weight in your identity.

The point is not to erase that identity. Jesus often makes you more faithful within your earthly responsibilities, not less. But He reorders them. Your family does not own your conscience. Your career does not define your worth. Your nation does not determine your ultimate hope. Your political party does not interpret Scripture for you. Jesus stands above every one of them.

This ordering matters because identities shape instincts. They influence what makes you defensive, whose criticism you dismiss, what information you trust, and whose approval you crave. When Christ is first, He gains permission to challenge every other loyalty.

That can feel unsettling, but it is actually liberating. An identity rooted in Jesus cannot be taken away by an election, a job loss, a market downturn, a disappointed family member, or a changing culture.

You belong to Christ. Before every role you perform and every group you identify with, you are His. Today, let that truth move from a statement you believe to an order you actually live.

  1. How would you honestly finish the sentence, “I am a Christian before I am a ______”?
  2. What would change in your decisions, conversations, spending, relationships, or online behavior if that order truly shaped your life?
  3. Which earthly identity gives you the greatest sense of security, and how is Jesus inviting you to find deeper security in Him?

Write “Christian before ______” somewhere you will see it today. Fill in the blank with the identity most likely to compete for first place. Before an important decision or conversation, look at that sentence and ask, “What would faithfulness to Jesus look like here?”

Prayer

Jesus, thank You that my deepest identity is found in You. Put every other label, role, loyalty, and relationship in its proper place. When competing voices speak loudly, teach me to recognize Yours. May belonging to You shape how I think, speak, choose, and live today. Amen.
