When Holy Things Become Contradictions

1 Corinthians 11:17-22Pastor Mike

Paul says something shocking to the Corinthian church: their gatherings were doing more harm than good. They were meeting in Jesus’ name, sharing a meal connected to Communion, and still allowing the social divisions of Corinth to shape the room. Some had plenty. Others were humiliated and left with little. The holy meal was preaching one message while their behavior preached another.

That warning reaches beyond Communion. You can sing about grace while carrying contempt. You can pray for unity while avoiding someone you have written off. You can receive mercy from God while quietly deciding another believer is too difficult, too different, or too wrong to deserve patience from you.

The problem is not that Christians must agree about everything. Paul’s concern is deeper: when your treatment of another believer contradicts the self-giving love of Jesus, something holy becomes distorted.

Today, ask the Spirit to show you where your behavior may be preaching a different sermon than your beliefs. Is there a relationship where pride, avoidance, superiority, or resentment has become normal? Do not begin by fixing the other person. Begin by letting Jesus search you. The Table calls you to more than correct theology. It calls you to become a person whose relationships tell the truth about the Gospel you receive.

Application

• Where is there a gap between what you believe about grace and the way you currently treat someone?

• Who are you most tempted to avoid, dismiss, or reduce to a label within the body of Christ?

• What might the Holy Spirit be asking you to confess before He asks you to correct anyone else?

Daily Challenge

Take ten quiet minutes and do a relational examination. Ask: “Lord, where am I carrying contempt, avoidance, superiority, or unresolved responsibility?” Write down any name or situation that comes to mind. Do not solve it yet; simply become honest before God.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, search my relationships as deeply as You search my private heart. Forgive me where my behavior contradicts the grace I confess. Expose pride, contempt, avoidance, and bitterness. Make my life and relationships tell the same Gospel that Your Table proclaims. Amen.
