Reflection
Tribalism teaches you to know who you are by knowing who you are against. Jesus gives you a different identity. Because you belong to Him, you do not need an enemy in order to feel secure.
That matters in a divided culture. It is easy to speak graciously about people who agree with you. The harder test is what happens inside you when you hear the name of a person, group, party, movement, or neighbor you strongly oppose. Do you immediately assume the worst? Do you caricature their motives? Do you enjoy seeing them embarrassed or defeated?
Jesus does not ask you to abandon conviction. He asks you to place conviction under the cross.
Citizens of heaven can tell the truth without cruelty. You can disagree without dehumanizing. You can oppose an idea while still seeing the person who holds it as someone made in God’s image and loved by Christ. You can refuse to call wrong right, even when “your side” does it. You can listen carefully without surrendering what you believe.
One of the clearest signs that Jesus has become your deepest allegiance is that contempt begins to lose its grip. The Holy Spirit forms in you a heart that is courageous without hatred, truthful without arrogance, and firm without becoming hard.
Application
- Who or what group are you most tempted to dismiss, stereotype, or speak about with contempt?
- How does the way you speak about people who disagree with you compare with Jesus’ command to love your enemies?
- Where might God be asking you to hold onto a strong conviction while changing the spirit in which you communicate it?
Daily Challenge
Choose one person or group you tend to view negatively. Instead of criticizing them today, pray for them by name. Ask God to bless them, draw them toward truth, meet their needs, and change anything in your own heart that keeps you from loving them as Christ commands.
Prayer
Father, forgive me when disagreement becomes contempt. Give me the heart of Jesus toward people who think, vote, believe, or live differently than I do. Make me courageous in truth and generous in love. Teach me to see every person through the eyes of Christ. Amen.
